Australia’s Emily Seebohm clocked the second fastest time of the year in the women's 100 metres backstroke en route to winning gold at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Cup at the Water Cube in Beijing.

Seebohm, winner of the 100m and 200m backstroke events at the recent World Championships in Kazan, claimed victory with a time of 58.59sec, which was a close second to her own best time of 2015.

"I swam 58.26 in Kazan," she said.

"I did not expect I could swim that fast.

"I am happy that it is just the beginning of the season.

"I would love to get faster and faster in the next stops of the World Cup and get ready for Rio Olympic Games."

Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu took second spot ahead of China’s Chen Jie, while United States’ Missy Franklin missed out on the podium in fourth.
