Gymnastics coach Marvin Sharp – who reportedly trained two Olympic silver medallists – has been found dead in a jail cell in the United States after facing child molestation charges.

The 49-year-old from Indianapolis was found unresponsive at Marion County prison in Oregon where he was being held on four counts of child molesting and three counts of sexual misconduct with a minor.

His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Katie Carlson, spokeswoman for the Marion County Sheriff's Office, said: "A follow-up investigation is being conducted by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, the Marion County Sheriff's Office and the Marion County coroner's office."

Sharp, who was arrested in August, is said to have coached US gymnasts Bridget Sloan and Samantha Peszek, who were part of the silver medal winning squad in the team event at Beijing 2008.

"USA Gymnastics is aware of the untimely death of Marvin Sharp," said a statement from the governing body to the Indianapolis Star.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of all involved in this tragic set of circumstances."
