Bulgarian boxers were unbeaten in their preliminary bouts on the third day of the EUBC European Confederation Boxing Championships in front of their home fans in Samokov.

The host’s perfect day began with an impressive performance by 21-year-old Tinko Banabakov in his men’s under 49 kilograms light flyweight division bout with Armenia’s Artur Hovhannisyan.

Banabakov took control of the contest in the first round and maintained the momentum throughout the duration of contest against one of Armenia’s highly regarded prospects, with the 19-year-old boxer struggling to live with Banabakov’s intensity.

The Bulgarian was awarded a unanimous points victory, with two judges awarding him the fight 29:28 while the third judges’ scorecard was 30:27 in his favour.

Radoslav Pantaleev was able to replicate his compatriot’s level of performance in his under 81kg light heavyweight bout with Greek fighter Polyneikis Kalamaras as the winner of the Baku 2015 European Games test event produced a confident display to win 30:27, 30:27, 29:28 on the judges’ scorecards.

A hat-trick of home triumphs by unanimous points victories was sealed by their over 91kg super heavyweight Petar Belberov as all three judges viewed the 25-year-old to have beaten Belarus’ Yan Sudzilouski by a score of 29:27.

The third day of competition saw a number of young boxers claim impressive victories, including Britain’s Harvey Horn as he came through a tough encounter with Germany’s Serge Neumann in the 49kg light flyweight division.

The Briton emerged as a unanimous victory on points with the judges having all scored the fight 30:27 and Horn will hope to seal a medal at the Championships by overcoming the second seed Dawid Jagodzinski in the quarter-final.

“I was satisfied with my performance as I won every round on every scorecard,” Horn said.

“My German opponent was an experienced boxer, but my tactic was to use my range and speed to keep him on the end of my backhand.

“I was a little tired towards the end of the last round, but I make sure I do everything right after my fight so I can perform to my potential every match no matter how many times I box in the championships.”

Another young boxer to make an impression in the light flyweight division was Azerbaijan’s 18-year-old Rufat Huseynov, the Nanjing 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games champion progressing on points past Georgia’s Mikhail Kazanjiani.

There was also a victory for Croatia’s Filip Hrgovic in the over 91kg super heavyweight division as the top seed, who enjoyed a bye in the first round, began his challenge with a dominant points victory over Ireland’s Dean Gardiner.
