Ukraine's Oleg Verniaiev and Russia's Aliya Mustafina won the European Games gold medals in the individual all-around events here today, despite failing to live up to their normal high standards.

Both came out on top even though they made mistakes during their routines which gave their opponents a glimmer of hope.

A mistake from Verniaiev on his best and favourite event, the parallel bars, led to an exciting finish.

"It showed that I need to work harder on parallel bars. However, it was a little mistake," he said.

The mistake meant Verniaiev , the 2015 European all-around champion, was only 0.401 points ahead of Azerbaijan's Oleg Stepko before competing on the last and final event, the high bar.

"There was big pressure on me because I'm the European champion. I was in tune for the victory," said Verniaiev.

In the end, Verniaiev took the gold by 1,267 points over Stepko as he finished his competition with a flawless high bar routine.

Verniaiev finished with 90.332, while Stepko had 89.065.

Russia's Nikita finished third with 87.365 points having led after the first apparatus but was then unable to mount a sustained challenge.

His errors included falling on the final event, the high bar.

Mustafina, 20, triumphed even though she wavered on an aerial skill on the balance beam, then wobbled out of a pirouette during her otherwise poised floor exercise routine to "My Way".

"Everything was done at a good level," said Mustafina, who scored 58.566 points.

"However, I did not have big mistakes.

"I think my performance today was not bad."

Switzerland's Giulia Steingruber jumped to the early lead on vault and delivered powerful routines on the other three apparatus for silver with 56.699 points.

Lieke Wevers, from The Netherlands, overtook Germany's Sophie Scheder with a confident floor exercise routine in the last rotation for bronze with 55.065 points.
