Thailand maintained their lead at the top of the medals table today by continuing their impressive run of form with seven titles at the Southeast Asian Games in Singapore.

They now have a total of 78, four more than the host nation.

Asian Games silver medallist Akkarinne Kitwijarn clinched the men’s under 63 kilogram taekwondo crown as he breezed past Myanmar’s Zaw in the final.

His compatriot Chanatip Sonkham then reigned supreme in the women’s under 49km category, comfortably beating Luisa Dos Santos Ruisa of Timor Leste to the gold medal.

Despite the defeat, the result proved historic for the nation, who are the latest edition to the multi-sport event.

Thailand also claimed two golds in the tennis events as Noppawan Lertcheewakarn got the better of team-mate Varatchaya Wongteanchai in the women’s singles.

Lertcheewakarn dropped the opening set before she launched a stunning turnaround to seal the title by virtue of a 3-6, 6-0, 6-4 scoreline.

Sonchat Ratiwatana teamed up with sibling doubles partner Sanchai to secure the men’s gold thanks to a straight-sets victory against the Philippines Ruben Gonzales and Jeson Patrombon.

Thailand also won golds in petanque, archery, sepak takraw, though they were denied in the cycling as Jutatip Maneephan looked to have won the women’s road race but was then adjudged to have committed a rule infringement and instead, the gold went to Vietnam's Nguyen Thi That.

They will have the opportunity to win the football tournament tomorrow after they thrashed Indonesia 5-0 in their semi-final to set up a meeting with Myanmar.

Elsewhere, controversy surrounded gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Hadi of Malaysia after it was claimed that her outfit was too revealing, which somewhat overshadowed her excellent display at the Games to date, where she has won two gold medals, a silver and three bronzes.

Comments slating her choice of outfit poured in on social media and forced Malaysian Government Minister Khairy Jamaluddin to defend her on Twitter.

“In her deeds only the Almighty judges her. Not you. Leave our athletes alone," he wrote on Twitter.
