Triathlete Gwen Jorgensen’s superb winning streak continued as she was announced as the winner of the United States Olympic Committee’s (USOC) women's Best of May award.

Jorgensen was honoured for her victories at both of International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Series (WTS) events held in May, as she extended her winning streak in the series to 10, underlining her world number one ranking.

The reigning ITU world champion firstly swept her competition aside at the WTS event in Yokohama, Japan, as she finished over a minute clear of her nearest challenger to take the title, before replicating her performance just two weeks later in London, as the US women completed their second podium clean sweep of the series.

Michael Wishnia, was given the men’s award, after the Paralympic track and field star set two national records at the Desert Challenge Games in Tempe, Arizona.

Competing in the F56 and F57 classification events, Wishnia first claimed the discus title with a throw of 39.7 metres, before his effort of 13 metres in the shot competition proved enough to earn his second victory of the competition.

Paralympic athletes claimed a second USOC award, with the ice sled hockey team rewarded for securing their third International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Ice Sledge Hockey World Championship title, by receiving the team award.

The US team made history by becoming the first team to go through the Championship with an unbeaten record, culminating in a 3-0 victory in the final against arch-rivals Canada, in Buffalo, New York.

The Sochi 2014 Paralympic champions also set a record for the most goals scored at a Championship, firing in 29 during the competition, while conceding on only one occasion, a record low.

Athletes are nominated by National Governing Bodies, with an internal nominating committee selecting five nominees from male and female categories to be put forward to the voting round, while three teams are selected.

NGBs count for 50 per cent of the overall vote, with fans making up the remaining tally by voting online at TeamUSA.org.

The awards are supported by DICK’S Sporting Goods, Kellogg’s, Samsung and USG, in addition to Dow, the presenting sponsor.
