The Bern Grand Prix took place at the weekend as it continued its environmentally friendly concept, supported by the Swiss Olympic Association.

Switzerland’s largest running event, also known as “the world’s most beautiful 10 miles”, is considered a pioneer in environmental matters.

A strict policy on recycling kitchen waste, with the view to transforming it into sustainable energy, is one of the many ways the Grand Prix enforces its commitment.

The use of recyclable dishes, and paper cups as oppose to plastic ones, are also contributing factors along with providing collection points for clothes and incorporating electronic start lists and rankings.

The Swiss Olympic Association supports the Grand Prix and other sporting events that produce little waste and wish to pursue a more sustainable policy, through its ecosport.ch programme.

"Integrating environmental protection in the organisation of a sports event is an important task and a challenge at all times," said Beatrice Fuchs, director of the Bern Grand Prix.

"The evolution of society and programmes such qu'ecosport.ch pushed us to commit ourselves to sustainable development."

The Bern Grand Prix contributed to the development of an efficient waste sorting system for large-scale sporting events though a collaboration with Migros, Switzerland's largest retail company, and other stakeholders.

The system also allows for the recycling of aluminium, glass and organic waste in spectator areas.

A total of 31,000 runners took part in this year’s Grand Prix, watched by more than 100,000 spectators, while as many as 29,000 bananas were distributed.

The backdrop of Bern's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, gives a unique feel to the event.
