A new sitting volleyball course has been launched today with the aim of boosting the Paralympic discipline in England.

The four-hour long workshop, aimed at anyone who wants to be involved in a playing or coaching capacity, will be rolled out across schools, colleges and other recreational platforms.

As well as presenting an overview of the sport, different techniques will be taught, while all participants will receive a resource booklet full of ideas for games and warm-ups as well as a starter kit consisting of five balls and a net.

“This new workshop is an exciting development for the sitting game," said Volleyball England chief executive, Lisa Wainwright.

"It has been designed for a large number of audiences - schools, colleges, school sports makers, multi-sport coaches and non-sport based leaders.

"It is ideal for people who work with pan-disability groups and those who are interested in exposing their participants to inclusive activity.”

Men's sitting volleyball was first introduced to the Paralympic medal programme at Arnhem 1980, with a women's event added at Athens 2004.

At London 2012, Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Iran in the men's final, while China overcame United States in the women's event, with Great Britain finishing eighth in both competitions.

But the sport is growing in profile in the London 2012 host nation, and was included in last year's inaugural Invictus Games, the event for wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women spearheaded by Prince Harry.

The British team defeated the United States 3-0 in the final.
