Health kits have been distributed by the National Olympic and Sports Committee of Guinea ©NOSCGHealth kits have been distributed by the National Olympic and Sports Committee of Guinea (NOSCG) as part of a drive to control the Ebola outbreak still ravaging the West African nation.

A total of 28 national sports federations as well as the nation's eight administrative regions have received such kits, which contain chlorine, boxes of soap, bleach and Thermo Scientific Flash analysers.

The kits were distributed at the NOSCG headquarters at the 28 September Stadium in capital Conakry, in the presence of Government and Red Cross officials as well as National Olympic Committee ones.

Guinea, the republic that declared independence from France in 1958, has been one of the worst hit by the regional Ebola epidemic in recent months, with around 2,200 people having died there out of a total death toll now thought to be over 10,000 across West Africa.

In distributing health kits, the NOSCG is following a trend set by other countries affected, with the Liberian National Olympic Committee also allocating health equipment across national communities.

Additionally, they are training 100 ambassadors to educate people on the importance of the preventative measures taken by the Government, spreading the message through television and radio, a campaign supported by Olympic Solidarity.

Last November, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach also met with National Olympic Committee of Sierra Leone counterpart Patrick Coker and praised their efforts in tackling the disease.

This included converting the NOC headquarters into a British-run treatment centre in the capital of Freetown.
