Majid Haq has been sent home from the Cricket World Cup for a racially related tweet ©Getty ImagesScotland slipped to a 148 runs defeat to Sri Lanka today after leading bowler Majid Haq was sent home from the Cricket World Cup in Australia and New Zealand for posting a supposedly racist tweet.

Haq, who has taken a Scottish record 60 one day international wickets and holds the all-time appearance record with 209 caps, was not selected for the clash with 1996 World Cup winners Sri Lanka in Hobart.

He tweeted: "Always tougher when you're in the minority! #colour #race" in a post that has since been deleted.

"Following a breach of Cricket Scotland's internal code of conduct, international team member, Majid Haq, is travelling home from the ICC World Cup," a statement by the national governing body announced.

"No further statement will be issued until internal processes have been completed in due course."

In his absence, the team slipped to a fifth successive defeat as the experience, skill and resilience of the Sri Lankan opposition proved far too strong.

Wicket keeper Kumar Sangakkara became the first player to score four successive one-day international centuries, hitting 124 in a total of 363-9 to follow on from previous three figure scores against Bangladesh, England and Australia.

Tillakaratne Dilshan also continued his superb form with 104 off 99 balls, while Angelo Mathews also contributed with 51.

Scotland never seemed likely to get close and were duly bowled out for 215, with captain Preston Mommsen and Freddie Coleman offering at least some resistance with respective scores of 60 and 70.

To add a touch of panache to an already brilliant performance, Sangakkara passed 500 one day international dismissals during the innings.

More fireworks from the likes of Sangakkara and Dilshan are required if Sri Lanka are to earn another victory, with the team now set to face South Africa in Sydney in the first World Cup quarter-final a week today.

Scotland will next face co-hosts Australia in their final pool match on Saturday (March 14) in Hobart.

Tomorrow's only match will see South Africa face already eliminated United Arab Emirates in Wellington.
