Paris will make a decision on whether or not to bid for the 2024 Olympics and Paralympics in January, the French capital's Mayor Anne Hidalgo has revealed, warning the country's President Francois Hollande she will not by influenced by his public support for the idea.
Hollande had said during an interview on French television last Thursday (November 6) that he backed the campaign.
But Hidalgo, a Socialist like Hollande, warned she would be more cautious following failed Paris bids for the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.
"At this point I don't have the elements at hand to decide," she said.
"There is no reason at this point to close a door or to open one.
"If there are dreams to share with the French, to share about the Olympics, I hope they can come true
"You need methods and you need to ask the right questions how to build a winning strategy,
"I'm not into chasing dreams...I know what happens when dreams come unstuck against harsh reality.
"This is what happened in the last three candidatures."
Hidalgo had claimed in May that "Parisians expect me to provide housing, public services, justice, economic ease" and that an Olympic bid had not figured in her election manifesto.
If Paris bids, they will be seeking to host the Games for the first time since 1924.
Hidalgo claimed there were "three essential things" if Paris bid,: ethics and transparency, a sound economic model and taking into account environmental concerns.
"If we do commit, then it's to win," Hidalgo said.
"I am sticking to the January schedule.
"We must have a serious and rigorous method."
