USA Swimming has named its squad for three major Championships over the next year ©Getty ImagesUSA Swimming has announced the athletes set to represent the nation at three major sporting events over the next year - the World Aquatics Championships in Kazan, Pan American Games in Toronto and Summer Universiade in Gwangju.

A squad with combined total of 14 Olympic gold medals will represent Team USA at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Championships in Kazan next August as the United States sends a 47-strong team to the event.

As expected, swimming sensation Michael Phelps has not been named in the squad following his recent drink driving charge and subsequent agreement with USA Swimming to withdraw from the event.

The focus will therefore fall on 11-time Olympic medallist Ryan Lochte to fill the shoes of the world's most successful ever Olympian, while Tyler Clary and Tim Phillips will take Phelps' spots in 200 metres individual medley and 100m butterfly events respectively.

Katie Ledecky and Missy Franklin will lead the American hopes in the women's team, with Franklin pegged for the 100m, freestyle 200m freestyle, 100m and 200 backstroke, and Ledecky set for the 200m, 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle.

Ledecky broke the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle world records this year, while Franklin won a record six gold medals at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona.

The FINA World Championships are scheduled to take place the Russian city from August 2 until 9.

Also named were the 36 pool athletes nominated to represent the US at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto from July 14 until 18.

Pending approval by the United States Olympic Committee, the roster includes a star-studded group featuring six Olympic gold medallists.

Headlining the group is three-time Olympian and 12-time Olympic medallist Natalie Coughlin, alongside Olympic gold medallists Cullen Jones, Matt McLean, Allison Schmitt and Nick Thoman.

A 46-strong team is set to represent the United States at the Gwangju 2015 Summer Univerisade with the likes of London 2012 Olympians Rachel Bootsma, Lia Neal and Shannon Vreeland headlining the squad.

The Universiade has become a springboard to international success for numerous swimmers, including Clary, Grevers, Jones and fellow Olympic gold medallists Rebecca Soni and Dana Vollmer.

The event is due to be held in Gwangju, South Korea from July 4 until 11 and sees athletes aged between 17 and 23 battling for international glory.
