Younger Brownlee brother Jonathan collected the bronze medal to right the outcome of their past two races where neither recorded podium finishes, and Alistair said he was pleased to be "getting back to his old self".

The pair was slow out of the 750-metre swim, but caught up in the cycle to lead the five-kilometre run with Alistair making his move with 600m to go.

Javier Gómez Noya of Spain finished the race in fourth place but it was enough to retain his top ranking.

Meanwhile, American Gwen Jorgensen made history in the women's race to become the first athlete to win four consecutive World Triathlon Series races in the same season.

After victories in Yokohama, London and Chicago the London 2012 Olympian came from the back of a large group that led at the start of the run to sprint away with a kilometre left to beat silver medallist Emma Jackson of Australia and Canadian Kirsten Sweetland by six seconds.

"It was really hard out there, I didn't have a great position on the bike and the run was really hard too, those girls really made me work," Jorgensen said.

"They were really coming for me at the end and I was really scared, I was tired, but I just have it everything I had."

Already the woman with the most wins in World Triathlon Series history after Chicago, Jorgensen's title haul now stands at seven race victories.

She is now equal with Australian Emma Moffatt for the most wins within a single season, but no athlete before has taken them in consecutive World Triathlon Series races.

"I try not to think about it too much and I just try and execute every race, but I think it's just testament to how much great support I have," Jorgensen added.

"Thank you to USA Triathlon, Jamie, Patrick, my training partners, everyone."
