The straights sets victory for Tomljanovic marked the first time in the Open era that the top three seeds have been knocked out before the fourth round following defeats for Serena Williams and Li Na earlier in the week.

It was a poor performance all-in-all by the Pole as she went down 6-4, 6-4 to her 21-year-old opponent, ranked 453rd at the end of 2012 after missing much of the season with mononucleosis.

The result left the door wide open for Russia's Maria Sharapova to claim her second French Open title as she looks to add to her victory from 2012.

The 27-year-old is now backed as one of the favourites to take the crown and did nothing to dampen these expectations after recording a complete whitewash over Argentine Paula Ormaechea, 6-0, 6-0.

As the women's tops seeds continue to fall, the men's favourites appear to be holding their nerve with both Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer making their way safely through to the fourth round.

Djokovic had to battle past a tough Marin Cilic to book his spot in the next round as the Croatian refused to lie down in the face of the unrelenting Serb.

The number two seed look to be comfortably on his way through to the second week, winning the first two sets without a hitch.

Cilic hit back in the third as he took a first set of the tournament from the former world number one, however, the perfect ending was not to be with Djokovic cranking up the heat to finish the match in four sets, 6-3, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.

The Serbian will now face home favourite Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in the fourth round after the Frenchmen dismissed last year's Wimbledon semi-finalist Jerzy Janowicz in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3.

Janowicz was bidding to become the first man from Poland to reach the last 16 at Roland Garros since Wojtek Fibak in 1982, but a determined Tsonga had other ideas as he strode to victory in front of a roaring home crowd.

Swiss fourth seed and 2009 champion Federer must have left Court Philippe Chatrier counting his misses after he made hard work of Russia's Dmitry Tursunov.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion converted just four of an incredible 21 break-point opportunities as he made his way to the second week with a 7-5, 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory.

Tomorrow is due to see a return to court for top seed Rafael Nadal as he looks to add a ninth French Open title to his collection.

Great Britain's Andy Murray will also be in action alongside David Ferrer, Petra Kvitova, Jelena Jankovic and Simona Halep.
