The world number one put in an error-strewn display on the clay of Roland Garros, losing 6-2, 6-2 to Spain's Garbine Muguruza.

Earlier, the American's sister, Venus, also exited the tournament, losing 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 to Slovakian Anna Schmiedlova.

Serena, who was favourite to win her third French Open title, made 29 errors and just eight winners in 64 minutes of tennis.

"It was one of those days," she said.

"You can't be on every day, and, gosh, I hate to be off during a Grand Slam.

"It's not the end of the world."

The 32 year-old, who won her first of two French Opens in 2002, added: "I think she [Muguruza] played really well and she played really smart.

"You know, it's great, because I'm going to go home and work five times as hard to make sure I never lose again."

The 2012 French Open champion, Maria Shapova, is one favourite who has made it into the third round of the women's draw.

Bulgaria Tsvetana Pironkova was beaten 7-5, 6-2 by the Russian.

In the men's singles, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer both enjoyed straight sets wins to advance to the last 32.

Serbian Djokovic beat French favourite Jeremy Chardy 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, while Swiss Federer dispatched Argentine Diego Sebastián Schwartzman 6-3, 6-4, 6-4.

There was also a straightforward victory for France's Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat Austria's Jürgen Melzer 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.

The second round is due to continue in Paris tomorrow with defending men's champion Rafael Nadal of Spain facing Austrian Dominic Thiem on Philippe Chatrier.

Britain's Andy Murray faces Australian Marinko Matosevic and Frenchman Gail Monfils will play German Jan-Lennard Struff.

In the women's draw, former Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic will face Marina Erakovic of New Zealand, and Serbia Jelena Janković plays Kurumi Nara of Japan.
