The 17-year-old, who won the 100m and 200m sprint double at last month's Para-South American Games in Santiago continued his fine form by crossing the line in a time of 21.99sec, just 0.25 outside the world record set by Australian Heath Francis in 2008.

In the men's T11 200m race, Daniel Mendes secured his third consecutive win over team-mate and reigning world champion Lucas Prado with a time of 22.78, while Mateus Evangelista took the men's T37 200m, posting a time of 24.26.

Japan's Atsushi Yamamoto broke the Brazilian stranglehold by taking the men's T42/T44 200m race, although his win was somewhat tempered by the fact that his main rival, Richard Browne of the United States, pulled out of the race after injuring a calf muscle in the warm-up.

"I'm really upset about it [the injury]," said Browne, who set an unofficial world record of 21.91 in the discipline at a meeting in Los Angeles last week.

But Yamamoto was delighted with his win, secured in a time of 26.02 to finish ahead of Brazilians Renato da Cruz and Jose Lima.

"I'm happy with this victory," he said.

"I was tired at the end, but I enjoyed the race."

On the women's side, world champions Terezinha Guilhermina and Veronica Hipolito ensured more home success at the Icarus Mello de Castro Stadium with wins in the T11 and T38 200m respectively.

The II Caixa Loterias Athletics Open Championships were the third event on the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics Grand Prix calendar and saw more than 400 athletes taking part.

Brazilian Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons was delighted with how the two-day event went.

"The results were excellent, both for the athletes and for the organisation," said Parsons, who is also vice-president of the IPC.

"This competition truly strengthens the sport.

"The competition is making a name for itself on the international calendar and we are making it stronger every year."

The next stop on the IPC Athletics Grand Prix circuit is due to be in Arizona on May 9 to 11.
