Hauke, who is the second successive German to claim the title following Moritz Fürste in 2012, was a central figure in the teams that won Olympic gold at Beijing 2008 and London 2012, before going on to secure victory in the Hockey World League Semi Final in Johor Bahru and the EuroHockey Nations Championships in Boom.

He now becomes one of only two players to win both the senior and junior FIH Player of the Year awards, with the other athlete to achieve this feat being Australia's Jamie Dwyer.

"I'm completely overwhelmed," Hauke, who received his award at the Hero Hockey World League Final in New Delhi, said.

"This makes me really proud and I would like to thank my team as this achievement would not have been possible without them.

"I'm a team player and I love playing in a team sport.

"This award means a lot me personally but of course our titles at the Hockey World League Semi Final in Johor Bahru and the TriFinance EuroHockey Nations Championships in Boom are as important."

Meanwhile, Hauke's compatriot Christopher Rühr was named as the FIH Talent of the Year after a remarkable breakthrough 2013.

The 19-year-old made his senior international debut at the 2012 Champions Trophy in Melbourne where he produced a string of outstanding performances, but he really began to shine at last month's Hero Hockey Junior World Cup where he scored nine goals to fire Germany to the title and earn the Player of the Tournament accolade.

Rühr was not present in India, so his award was instead collected on his behalf by German coach Markus Weise.
