January 10 - Germany's Henri Junghaenel and Italy's Jessica Rossi have won the International Shooting Sport Federation's (ISSF) Shooter of the Year awards for 2013.
Voted for by members of the ISSF Athletes' Commission and the ISSF Coaches Advisory Committee, as well as a panel of international sport journalists, the awards look to recognise the two best shooters of the 2013 season.
The 25-year-old rifle shooter Junghaenel was voted the men's Shooter of the Year with 83 points, almost 20 points more than second place Yang Haoran of China.
The German had a fantastic 2013 taking gold in both the 50 metre Rifle 3 Positions and the 50m rifle prone events at the World Cup stage in Changwon – his first participation under the new ISSF rules.
He followed this up with another podium at the World Cup in Granada where he took bronze in the 50m rifle prone event, before sealing silver in the same event at the European Championships in Osijek, Croatia.
He rounded off the season in the best possible fashion, claiming the 50m rifle prone title at the ISSF World Cup Final in Munich, scoring 211.2 points in the final.
Rossi, reigning Olympic champion in the women's trap event, topped the female's vote with 55 points, two more than Serbia's Zorana Arunovic in second, to take her second ISSF Shooter of the Year award – having claimed the award in 2009 at just 17 years-old.
The 23-year-old, who won gold in the trap at London 2012 with a world record score of 99 hits, secured a silver and bronze in the ISS World Cup stages in Acapulco, Mexico, and Al Ain, United Arab Emirates, respectively.
The 23-year-old Italian found even more success outside of the World Cup Series, winning gold at the Mediterranean Games and the European Championship, just one month before being crowned world champion at the 2013 ISSF Shotgun World Championship in Lima, Peru.
The two Shooters of the Years will be officially awarded during the 2014 ISSF Shooting World Cup Series.
