He then switched back to the 13-a side league code in an attempt to become the first person to win World Cup titles in both versions - although that ultimately failed when his side were defeated in last months final 34-2 by Australia at Old Trafford.

After the completion of this season's commitments with his club side the Sydney Roosters, the 28-year old will then switch back to union to pursue a place in the 2015 World Cup squad as well as potentially in the Olympic team.

A colourful and multi-talented figure, Williams has also boxed professionally to win all six of his bouts and only lost his New Zealand heavyweight title, due to inactivity, earlier this year.

New Zealand Rugby Union chief executive Steve Tew claimed Williams had told him during negotiations that he will pursue a place in the All Blacks World Cup squad in 2015 and in sevens team when the abbreviated sport makes its Olympic debut in 2016.

"Sonny showed in his two years with New Zealand rugby that he is an outstanding talent and was a real asset to our game," said Tew.

"We are delighted to have agreed terms which will see him return to rugby in 2015."

It will certainly be no easy task for Williams to be successful in returning to the starting line up of the New Zealand team however at either 15-a side or sevens, the reigning World Series champions and early favourites for the inaugural Olympic title.
