Held this day each year, it looks to increase awareness of those with a disability, with the ultimate goal of removing barriers and enabling equal participation for all persons with an impairment.

This year's theme is "Break Barriers, Open Doors: for an inclusive society and development for all".

To coincide with the day, the IPC launched the video which celebrates the contributions made by para-athletes in the change and development of para-sport within the communities in which they live.

The video describes the history of the Paralympic Movement highlighting the milestones that have been reached so far in terms of athlete participation, development of sporting events, increased commercial support and media coverage.

In naming the film "all about ability" the IPC aims to focus on the abilities of athletes rather than their disabilities.

The film also highlights the work being done by the Agitos Foundation to help increase sporting opportunities to all.

The Agitos Foundation is running a social media campaign to raise awareness of the work being done by countries and organisations around the world to create an inclusive society.

They have urged organisations from all reaches of the globe to send in photos of projects they are running to their Twitter and Facebook accounts.

The day is a particularly good opportunity for developing nations, which often do not get the chance to showcase their great work because of a lack of resources or low awareness of para-sport locally.
