Vijender Singh 160413April 16 - Indian Olympic boxing medallist Vijender Singh has tested negative for banned substances, India's Sports Ministry has confirmed, following allegations that he took heroin bought from smugglers last month.

The Ministry said that a "full menu test was conducted, which included testing for psychotropic substances", in a statement today.

"Vijender Singh along with four others was subjected to an out of competition test for banned substances," the statement read.

"A full menu test was conducted which included testing for psychotropic substances.

"Tests were only carried out on blood and urine samples.

"The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports is glad to announce that on the basis of these tests none of the boxers were found to have used any banned substances in the recent past."

The 27-year-old middleweight fighter, who secured his nation's first ever Olympic medal in the sport when he won bronze at Beijing 2008, agreed to give samples following accusations from police in India's Punjab state that he consumed heroin when they arrested him, among 15 other people, after seizing 26 kilograms of the drug.

Singh strongly denied the charges but originally refused to take a doping test by police.
