Oscar Pistorius_christchure_13-03-12March 13 - The staging of last year's International Paralympic Committee (IPC) World Athletics Championships are set to be recognised after they were shortlisted for the New Zealand Sport and Recreation award for Event Excellence.

The awards recognise outstanding commercial or non-profit events for their contribution to the world of sport and recreation.

The IPC World Championships, which took place in New Zealand last year on January 21 until 30, are up against the Owen G Glenn Hockey Champions Trophy and the NZCT AIMS Games National Sporting Championships.

The awards seek to highlight outstanding events and to share best practises between organisations.

It is the third year of the awards, and the winners will be announced on April 30 at the New Zealand Sport and Recreation Awards Dinner at a yet to be confirmed venue.

More than 1,000 athletes competed at the IPC World Athletics Championships last year, including the likes of four time Paralympic gold medallist Oscar Pistorius (pictured).

They took place in the city of Christchurch, despite an earthquake which struck there just months earlier in September 2010.
