Sascha_Kindred_doing_breaststrokeApril 11 - Britain have named a formidable team of 43 to compete at the 2011 International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Swimming European Championships in Berlin with includes double Paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds, multi-medallist Sascha Kindred (pictured) and world record holder Natalie Massey all included.

The prestigious competition, which takes place between July 3 and 10, will be the last major competition for the athletes before London 2012 and National Performance Director John Atkinson, who has been in charge of the disability swimming programme for just under a year, believes his athletes have what it takes to impress in Germany.

"The selection policy has allowed us to take a strong team of athletes that have the potential to improve on their times from Sheffield and make a mark in Berlin," Atkinson said.

"The blend of experience and previous medallists together with youth is good for the future development of the team.

This is the last benchmark meet before the London Paralympics and it will be good to see what our athletes have just a year away from the Games.

"For any team the aim is to improve from the trial event to the major meet of the year.

"I believe that if the swimmers work hard in their training and achieve improvements then they will put themselves in a good place for success at the European Championships."

The squad for Berlin was selected following the British International Disability Swimming Championships in Sheffield which took place over the weekend.

The standout performers at the event were undoubtedly Kindred and Massey who sent an ominous warning to their European rivals as both claimed world records in Sheffield.

Kindred broke his own SM6 world record in the men's 200 metres individual medley as he won gold in 2min 41.99sec while Massey set new figures in the S14 400m freestyle as she stormed to victory in 4:44.48.

The three-day event also saw gold medal performances from the likes of Jonathan Fox, Ben Procter and Simmonds as the team showed exactly why they will be one of the strongest in Berlin.
