FISU claimed that they had no choice but to take the decision because serious delays and the withdrawal of Government funding last month threatened the event, especially after the recent resignation of the entire Organising Committee. 

The FISU has now moved quickly to reach an agreement with the Italian Province, renowned for its mountains, such as the Dolomites, as its new host for the 26th Winter Universiade.

The event, which is expected to attract nearly 2,000 athletes competing in 11 sports from more than 50 countries, is set to take place between December 11 and 21 next year, although these dates still need to be confirmed.

"We are extremely happy with this outcome," said Eric Saintrond, chief executive of the FISU.

"Trentino has all venues in place and has great experience in hosting snow and ice sport events.

"Of course FISU will provide this substitute host with the needed support to stage a wonderful event for the participants.

"We owe this to our student-athletes.

"It also shows the strength of our organisation and the FISU Family, securing continuity of our Games in a moment of crisis."
