On a night when a major power cut in northern Brussels affected operations at the second International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Diamond League final of the season at the King Baudouin Stadium, world 1,500 metres champion Faith Kipyegon and Sifan Hassan of The Netherlands lit up the evening with an all-out surge around the final lap that eventually saw the Kenyan edge ahead to claim her first Diamond Trophy.

Conseslus Kipruto maintained Kenya’s great tradition in the Olympic 3,000 metres steeplechase here as he became his country’s ninth consecutive winner in an Olympic record of 8min 03.28sec.

The unique depth of American talent in the women’s 100 metre hurdles meant that the US Olympic Track and Field Trials were going to be painful for some world class athletes - and as things turned out, it was the athlete who ran the second fastest ever time of 12.24sec on the same track in Eugene on May 28, Keri Harrison, who failed to make the trip to Rio de Janeiro next month. 

Despite the absence through injury of Usain Bolt in tonight’s International Association of Athletics Federations’ Paris Diamond League meeting, Jamaican sprinters dominated the men’s and women’s 100 metres, with Asafa Powell and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce winning in 9.81sec and 10.74 respectively.
