Only two athletes in Summer Olympic history have won medals competing for different countries

Two athletes have won Summer Olympic gold medals competing for two different nations. Daniel Carroll first won gold in rugby union representing Australia at London 1908 and then again at Antwerp 1920 for the United States after he had stayed in the country following a tour there. The Georgian-born Kakhi Kakhiashvili won his first gold medal in men’s weightlifting under-90 kilograms competing as part of the Unified Team at Barcelona 1992 and later as a Greek citizen at Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000 in the under-99kg and under-94kg categories.

The right Angle

American Kurt Angle won the Olympic gold medal in the men's freestyle wrestling heavyweight division at Atlanta 1996 despite suffering a fractured neck. After the Games, Angle went on to star in World Wrestling Entertainment and won the WWE Championship belt four times  and World Heavyweight Championship title one. He remains the only professional wrestler to have won an Olympic gold medal.

Atlanta Sound Machine

The official theme music of the 1996 Olympic in Atlanta was Summon the Heroes by John Williams, his third composition at a Games following Olympic Fanfare and Theme at Los Angeles 1984 and The Olympic Spirit at Seoul 1988. The official song, however, of Atlanta 1996 was Reach, sung by Gloria Estefan at the Closing Ceremony.

The greatest judoka in Olympic history

Japan's Tadahiro Nomura is widely considered the greatest judoka in Olympic history, having won gold medals in the under 60 kilogram category at Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens. Nomura is only judoka to have won three consecutive Olympic gold medals. He was first Olympic competitor from Asia to win three consecutive gold medals in any event. His win in Athens was 100th gold medal won by Japan in the Summer Olympics since the country's debut at Stockholm in 1912. Nomura's father was the coach of Shinji Hosokawa, winner of an Olympic gold medal at Los Angeles 1984 in the same division. Nomura's uncle, Toyokazu Nomura, meanwhile, was also an Olympic gold medalist at Munich 1972 in the under 70 kg division.
