This weekend’s British Athletics Indoor Championships in Arena Birmingham has highlighted Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces campaign to promote equality in sport.

I am hoping that I am not alone in this, but do you think every year about this time it gets busier and busier? It’s the usual ‘silly season’ stuff, plus work. Once upon time, people slowed down noticeably; now it’s a million miles an hour right up to Christmas Day.

The Rainbow Round of Sport, held between April 6 and 9, aimed to highlight the issue of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) prejudice in sport, by showing support for athletes, fans, volunteers and others involved in sport who may be LGBTI by wearing rainbow laces.

I’m back from a summer break in Australia for the festive period – and glad to be so. Not just to be back in Europe and away from sweltering Sydney, but also to be back on deck for a new year. There’s so much to do.

I had an interesting experience towards the end of last year. It occurred when I visited the CEO of a prominent local sporting team to brief them about SKINS' then forthcoming social marketing campaign around supporting LGBT individuals in the sporting environment, known as #RainbowLaces.

We have launched in Australia a real live example of how we want to make a difference. It’s the "Rainbow Round of Sport" to help highlight the issues around homophobia in sport by inviting athletes and teams to wear #RainbowLaces, from March 31 through to April 4 across all sport. We will be highlighting the campaign across six elite, professional sports in Australia.
