Rio_celebrations_2December 30 - The logo for the 2016 Olympics will be unveiled for the first time at Rio de Janeiro's traditional New Year's celebrations tomorrow.

It will be shown at 10pm before the fireworks at Copacabana beach are set to go off at midnight.

The logo will be projected on a huge screen on the sand at a special ceremony attended by up to two million partygoers, including Jacques Rogge, the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Rio 2016 Committee President Carlos Arthur Nuzman, Brazilian Sports Minister Orlando Silva, the Rio State Governor Sérgio Cabral and Rio de Janeiro's Mayor Eduardo Paes will also attend the launch.

Some 25 tons of explosives, distributed among 11 rafts along the shore of the two-and-a-half mile beach, will mark the height of the night.

Brazilian Olympic organisers have said the Rio 2016 brand was created to reflect the city's culture and represent its natural wonders and joyful residents.

They said the logo was designed based on four pillars: contagious energy, harmonious diversity, exuberant nature and Olympic spirit.

Nearly 140 agencies participated in the process to design the logo and only eight made it into the final phase.

A multidisciplinary team of 15 national and international members of Rio 2016's Organising Committee made the final decision a few months ago.

"The role of the emblem is to globalise the cultural aspects of the host city and host country, inspire the athletes, that are the main character of event, and all audience involved," said Beth Lula, manager of the Branding Department of Rio 2016 Organising Committee.

"The goal is to connect the whole world with the Olympic values of excellence, respect and friendship, give our partners the chance of creating an association with the event, but, above all, mark it as a unique event."
