The 26-year old German recovered from a poor jumping round where he was languishing in eighth place to cross the line 2.9 seconds ahead of Austrian Bernhard Gruber in the 10 kilometres race.

Frenzel started the day in buoyant mood after he topped the standings from the first day of competition but it was compatriot Tino Edelmann who proved the strongest in the jumping round.

Edelmann leapt a huge distance of 106.5 metres which, added to his score from day one, gave him a points tally of 115.1 and a 30 second head start over nearest challenger Fabian Steindl.

Jarl Riiber took third place with a jump of 99.5 metres, which meant he started the 10km cross country race 34 seconds behind leader Edelmann, while Frenzel's effort of 94 metres meant he was 54 seconds adrift.

However, it was a gap he felt he could claw back and he began at a ferocious pace and caught up the leading pack of Steindl and Riiber fairly early on, with Haavard Klemetsen, Wilhelm Denifl and Gruber also contesting the lead.

Frenzel broke away from the rest and provided the strongest challenge to compatriot Edelmann, who never looked like claiming an overall victory owing to suffering from a stomach infection, and he was subsequently passed on the last leg, although he did eventually finish third.

Gruber meanwhile continued to keep pace with the German but it proved to be in vein as Frenzel held off his strong challenge to claim the overall World Cup lead.

The result leaves Fabian Rießle in second on the leaderboard, 25 points behind the leader and Gruber currently lies third on 322 points, 99 adrift of Frenzel.

The race provided dramatic entertainment but it proved to be the last at the event for the likes of Riiber, Taylor Fletcher, young Austrians Paul Gerstgraser, Martin Fritz and Bernhard Flaschberger as they finished outside of the top 30 and will therefore not compete in the third and final round, which takes place tomorrow.
