Frances Tessa Worley after winning silver in the womens giant slalomMarch 27 - France's giant slalom world champion Tessa Worley had to settle for silver in the discipline here today at the 2013 International Military Sports Council (CISM) World Winter Games after the athlete was hit by sickness last night.

With Worley (pictured top) under par, Italy's Elena Curtoni put on a superb performance to take the gold in 2:08.32 – a result she was delighted with.

"It's pretty great," Curtoni told insidethegames.

"Second [Worley] is the world champion, so it's very good.

"I had fun and I tried to ski as I should and it worked out for me.

"She [Worley] is still one of the best skiers in the world and she's pretty young too, she just three years older than me so it's challenging but it's super fun.

"And ending the season with a win is always good.

"I will have good memories when I start the new season."

Finishing the race in 2:08.46, Worley remained philosophical about her second place finish today.

"I was sick last night," she explained.

"So it cost me a lot of energy.

"I just tried to put everything I could on all the runs and rest between the runs.

"I'm happy with second.

"It's just perfect to be home and have these kinds of races.

"I can see everyone is very happy to see us, the French team, and to be able to perform like this on the races is just great.

"I tried everything and I don't have any regrets.

"This morning I didn't even think I was going to be racing so I'm really happy with this medal."

The bronze medal went to Worley's compatriot Anémone Marmottan, who finished in 2:09.93.

The men's race in the discipline saw Switzerland claiming the gold medal, as Manuel Pleisch finished in a time of 2:05.31.

Joining Pleisch on the podium was Italian Olympian Massimiliano Blardone, who won silver in 2:05.68, and fellow Swiss Marc Berthod in 2:06.05.

Pleisch explained that the gold in this race holds particularly significant, especially with such tough competition.

"It's really cool that I won the last race of the season, it's perfect," he told insidethegames.

"It was really challenging with Marc and Massimiliano, so I'm really lucky that I won because they are really good in the World Cup too so it was a hard race."
