Leanna Caron head and shoulder 2June 9 - Leanna Caron has been elected as the new President of Skate Canada at its 100th Annual Convention and General Meeting (ACGM) in Ottawa.

Caron, who grew up in Timmins, Ontario and is a graduate of the University of Toronto, was elected for a two-year team.

An Olympic-level judge with the International Skating Union, Caron had first been elected to the Board of Skate Canada in 2008 and served on numerous domestic and international committees.

She is currently vice-president and general manager at Genzyme, a Sanofi company, a French multinational pharmaceutical firm, overseeing the global commercial operations for the cell therapy and regenerative medicine business, based in Boston.

"We have such a rich history of excellence in skating in Canada," said Caron.

"I will work to see Skate Canada maintain our leadership position, supporting our athletes, coaches and officials to evolve and develop the sport even further.

"Our foundation is our local clubs across the country who are the backbone of our success."

Caron's appointment means that she will work closely with Dan Thompson, who was last week named as the new chief executive of Skate Canada, and is due to start his role on June 17.
