Jon_Montgomery_celebrates_World_Cup_victory_Whistler_November_2010November 27 - Canada's Olympic champion Jon Montgomery opened his season with a victory in the opening World Cup skeleton event of the season at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

The 31-year-old from Manitoba maintained his perfect record on the track having won there in the World Cup in 2009 and the Olympics in February.

Montgomery led after his first run and then kept his nerve on his second and final run to finish in a combined time of 1min 47.56sec.

Britain's Kristan Bromley was second in 1:47.84 and Olympic bronze medallist Alexander Tretiakov of Russia third in 1:47.88.

"It's awesome," Montgomery said.

"This is going to be one of the premier stops on the World Cup circuit for years to come.

"It's exciting to watch and I think people here in Whistler realise that.

"I felt good today but I didn't feel overly confident.

"I knew that I was going to have to be near perfect to be on the podium."

Bromley, 38, was happy with his performance.

"Jon's really hot on this track and it's really difficult to beat him," he said.

"He's pretty much the Whistler specialist.

"To be two-tenths ahead on my second run, I'm pretty pleased.

"It means that when we come back there's a lot of confidence and hope there."

Earlier, Bromley's partner, Shelley Rudman, finished fifth in the women's event.

Rudman, sixth at the same track during the Olympics earlier this year, was drawn first to go and posted the third fastest time of the first run with 55.13.

However, in contrast to many of her rivals, the 29-year-old from Wiltshire was unable to improve on it in the second run, clocking 55.45 to end out of the medal placings.

Germany's Marion Thees emerged victorious, the former world champion clocking a total of 1:48.98, 0.42 faster than second-placed Mellisa Hollingsworth of Canada, the reigning World Cup champion.
