PZPS President Miroslaw Przedpelski and deputy Arthur Popko have each been arrested and will be held for three months as an investigation continues into allegations the pair accepted a zł980,000 PLN (£186,000/$290,000/€232,000) bribe from the owner of a security firm in exchange for working at the World Championships, held in Poland in September.

If found guilty, they face the prospect of 12-years in prison.

Biernat met with other PZPS Board members to discuss the issue in Warsaw, after which he called an EGM of all PZPS delegates, due to take place next Wednesday (November 26).

An independent audit into the organisation of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Championships, which took place in August and September in the nation, will be undertaken, with a process underway to hire an "internationally recognised consulting firm".

In a statement, the Ministry added: "Respecting the autonomy of the Polish Volleyball Federation  and the principle of the presumption of innocence of suspects principal officers of the Association, the Minister expressed his expectation that in the current situation, for the good of Polish volleyball, authorities take appropriate decisions to the situation."

Despite a proposal by the PZPS Board earlier this week, no decision to remove either Przedpelski or Popko from their position has yet taken place, due to "a lack of statutory rules which would directly regulate the matter of suspending of the Board members".

It is thought this will be discussed further at the meeting next week.

In the meantime, two new Board members, Waldemar Wspaniały and Andrzej Ladziński, a lawyer, have been added, with the PZPS insisting the running of the organisation has been unaffected.

"We would like to assure you that all of the PZPS bodies remain fully capable of conducting their statutory activities," a statement said.

"All projects and activities are being conducted without any complications and according to schedule.

"We guarantee that this situation will in no way affect the current functioning and future plans of our Federation.

"We will do everything possible to continue to bring joy and satisfaction to our amazing fans, who are the cornerstone of Polish volleyball."

Both the FIVB and the European Volleyball Confederation, of which Przedpelski is vice-president, are waiting for the investigation to run its course before making an official comment on a Championships that had been praised as the "greatest ever".
