In Pool E, China retained their position at the summit of the standings after a 25-16, 25-23, 25-23 victory over Germany in Trieste.

Behind them are the hosts, who beat Azerbaijan in four sets, and the Dominican Republic, who overcame Belgium 25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 22-25, 15-6, in Bari.

Japan suffered a five-set defeat to Croatia in the Pool's other encounter in Trieste, but remain a point clear of their opponents in fourth spot.

In Pool F, the United States fought back from a set down against Turkey in Modena to win 27-29, 25-19, 25-23, 25-15 and maintain maximum points.

Brazil currently lie in second place after a straight-sets victory against Kazakhstan in Verona, while Russia's 25-23, 25-15, 26-28, 25-19 win over Bulgaria in Modena saw them retain third spot.

Serbia beat The Netherlands in straight sets in Verona and occupy fourth position.

Tomorrow's Pool E action in Bari sees the Dominican Republic go up against Azerbaijan before Italy face Belgium.

Croatia meet China in Trieste after Germany's encounter with Japan.

In Pool F, Serbia's clash with Kazakhstan and Brazil's contest with The Netherlands forms the line-up in Verona.

Modena plays host to Turkey's match with Russia and Bulgaria's tie with the United States.
 
The top three teams from each Pool will advance to the third round where semi-final places will be up for grabs.
