The British number one took to social networking site Twitter to tell his 2.71 million followers that his view has been "totally swayed" over the last few days, as millions of his fellow Scots today vote in a referendum on whether to end the nation's 307-year union with England.

"Excited to see the outcome," Murray, who has no vote himself as he lives near London, wrote.

"Let's do this!"

Scotland has set a target date of March 2016 for independence if the nation votes yes, leaving just months for a new Scottish National Olympic Committee to be set up in time for the Rio 2016 Olympics, which are due to begin on August 5.

Nevertheless, International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach promised earlier this month that the interests of Scottish athletes will be protected ahead of the Games in Brazil should the country vote for independence as they could be ineligible to compete for Great Britain.

The result of the referendum is expected to be revealed early tomorrow morning.
