The Welsh teenager was desperate to emulate fellow Briton Damon Sansum's golden success 24 hours earlier.

And Jones appeared set to fulfil her ambition after a semi-final revenge win over Chinese world champion, Yuzhou Hou.

However, such is China's strength in the -57 kg weight division, Jones could not overcome Yun Wang in the final.

Beaten 8-3, the 18-year-old from Flint said: "I'm obviously gutted to get silver as I came here for gold.

"But it was a tough competition with a lot of fighters who have already qualified for the Olympics.

"I had to fight three Chinese girls and was buzzing after the world champion.

"I gave that fight my everything.

"But I was tired for the final after giving so much mentally and physically.

"I've just got to get back to the gym now and focus on being ready for the Dutch Open and then the European Championships in Manchester in May."

Sansum from Elgin won his first A class tournament with a 9-8, sudden death success against compatriot Lutalo Muhammad.

"I'm made up beyond all belief," said Sansum, a graduate from the 'Fighting Chance' initiative.

"I've won things before in kick boxing at the top level, but this means 10 times all of that.

"I've been training full time for the last year and a half and am still learning and today it all came together.

"And now it puts my stamp on the Olympics and its getting more of a dream now.

Spennymoor's Jamie Abley completed Britain's medal haul with a -59kg junior silver.
