New Zealand have won the second round of the IRB Women's Sevens World Series in Atlanta ©IRBFebruary 16 - New Zealand thrashed Canada in the final of the USA Rugby Sevens to claim the second round of the International Rugby Board (IRB) Women's World Series at the Fifth-Third Bank Stadium in Atlanta's Kennesaw State University.

After tasting defeat at the hands of Australia in the last round in Dubai, the defending champions got back to winning ways in Atlanta to give themselves a two point lead in the standings.

Following a trio of wins on the opening day, the New Zealand women breezed past Japan 42-0 in the quarter-finals before beating Russia by 24 points to seven to set up a final match encounter with the Canadians.

Wins over hosts the United States and Dubai Sevens champions Australia in the quarter and semi-finals respectively gave Canadian team a huge confidence boost coming into the final.

But this was soon extinguished by a rampant New Zealand who beat Canada 36-0.

"The way the girls performed was pretty outstanding," New Zealand coach Sean Horan said.

"We're building, we're getting better and we still believe in ourselves, in fact we probably focus more on ourselves than others.

"It's about getting the body and the mind right.

"You want to peak on the second day of the tournament and that's what we did.

"I'm happy with our performance."

Third place in the tournament was won by Australia, who bounced back from their semi-final defeat to Canada to beat Russia 22-12.

The hosts gave their home support a reason to cheer in the Plate final as they shut-out Spain to claim a 22-0 win.

After being knocked out of both the Cup and Plate competitions, England had to settle for seventh after beating Japan in the seventh and eighth place play-off whilst The Netherlands thrashed China 33-0 to secure the Bowl.

New Zealand's Sarah Goss was named Most Valuable Player (MVP), although US rookie Jessica Javelette hit the headlines on native soil after she scored seven tries just five weeks after taking up rugby as a sport.

Eleven of the twelve sides now travel on to São Paulo for Round three of the Series, which is due to start on Friday (February 21).
