Japan edged_Hong_Kong_33-22_in_the_Borneo_finalSeptember 18 - Tickets for the 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Russia have now gone on sale with the prestigious tournament set to be the biggest event in the sport before the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The competition, which will take place between June 28 and 30, with 24 men's teams and 16 women's teams in action, will be staged at the 78,360-capacity Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, the biggest sports stadium in Russia which hosted the Olympics in 1980.

Day tickets are priced from just £3 ($5/€4) per person, with a three-day pass costing only £8 ($13/ €10), as the Rugby Union of Russia looks to attract new fans from across the country to the sport.

"This is a special landmark for 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens as we are now engaging directly with the global rugby family and general public," said Rugby Union of Russia President Vyacheslav Kopyov.

"We offer a warm welcome to all visitors to Moscow and we are confident that you will leave knowing that you have been part of something special, a tournament that has connected with a new Rugby frontier and one that has added to the sport's reach and left its mark.

"Our goal is to deliver a spectacular Rugby World Cup Sevens with a ticketing policy that delivers a variety of ticket packages affordable for all visitors.

"I would like to express my thanks for the support of the Russian business community and to the Russian Government, and the City of Moscow, all of whom are committed to delivering an event that will showcase the Game and drive further growth in the region."

In addition to the cheap tickets, it is expected that competitive travel, visa and hotel packages for international visitors from official operators will attract thousands of fans from the competing teams with details of those packages to become available in due course.

The 2013 tournament will be the sixth and edition of the Rugby World Cup Sevens and it will see Wales attempting to retain the men's title it won in Dubai in 2009, while Australia look to hold on to the women's crown.

The International Rugby Board plan to scrap the tournament after Moscow to ensure that the Olympics is the biggest tournament in the sport.

Qualifying for the tournament began in Moscow earlier this year and the identities of 18 men's and 11 women's teams competing are already known.

IRB chairman Bernard Lapasset said the tickets going on sale marks an important moment for the tournament and indeed the sport as it gears up for Rio 2016, where rugby will be making its first appearance at the Olympics since Paris 1924 and sevens for the first time ever.

"This is a moment that sevens fans in Russia and around the world have been waiting for as the tickets for 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens go on sale for the first time," said Lapasset.

"Through a competitive ticketing programme and a global broadcast platform, Russia 2013 will give thousands of sports fans in Moscow and around the world the opportunity to experience this thrilling, all-action sport up close and personal ahead of our Olympic Games debut in Rio in 2016.

"Rugby Sevens is going from strength to strength around the world with record participation figures, more men's and women's nations competing at the top level, record attendance numbers and ever-growing broadcast figures and I am sure that 2013 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Russia will write another memorable chapter in the rugby sevens success story."
