tereshukMay 31 - Beijing 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Victoria Tereshuk of Ukraine overcame scorching conditions to win the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) World Cup Final in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod.

The 31-year-old former world and European champion started in third in the combined following 21 wins in the fencing, the fourth-fastest time in the pool and an impressive ride to put her in a strong position going into the shooting.

The Ukrainian held her nerve in the shooting to edge ahead of home favourite Ekaterina Khuraskina, who had to settle for second.

"It is such a great feeling to win here," said the former Ukrainian Sportswoman of the Year.

"I am just so happy.

"Today I was feeling very strong and starting third in the combined I knew that if I got shooting right then I could win."

The bronze medal also went to Ukraine, as Tereshuk's team-mate Ganna Buriakb finished third, ahead of Lithuanian world number one and reigning Olympic champion Laura Asadauskaite, who overcame a nightmare start to claw her way back to fourth.

Asadauskaite will be under pressure to regain her form after a disappointing year, with the World Championships in Chinese Taipei set to get underway in August.
