gbhockey logoNovember 20 - Great Britain has named an 18-man squad for hockey's Champions Trophy in Auckland, New Zealand, next month.

Included in the squad is East Grinstead pair Mark Gleghorne, who could make his debut, and Mark Pearn, who has recovered from injury.

Simon Mantell of Reading returns after missing the European Championships in August - where Britain claimed bronze - whilst the captain, Barry Middleton, also of East Grinstead, is back to lead the team this year after missing the event in 2010.

The Champions Trophy runs from 3-11 December, and Britain will be in Pool A along with Spain, Pakistan and the World Champions, Australia.

Pool B comprises South Korea, Germany, Netherlands and the hosts, New Zealand, and the top two teams in each pool will progress to the semi-finals.

Britain will play Pakistan on December 3, before facing Australia the following day and Spain on December 6.

Their head coach, Jason Lee, said: "We are currently in an extended training phase and the Champions Trophy will help indicate how our preparation for next summer is going.

"It also gives us the opportunity to see some of the athletes that weren't involved in the European Championships.

"Selection has been particularly difficult due to the current strength and depth of the squad."

As the Olympics are less than a year away, the home nations are competing together as Britain, whereas England, Scotland and Wales play separately on the international stage in non-Olympic years.

Given that England claimed silver last year at the Champions Trophy, hopes will be high of a similarly impressive result as they gear up for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Full Great Britain squad: Adam Dixon (Beeston), James Fair (Cannock), Mark Gleghorne (East Grinstead), Ben Hawes (Wimbledon), Ashley Jackson (East Grinstead), Glenn Kirkham (East Grinstead), Iain Lewers (East Grinstead), Iain Mackay (Reading), Richard Mantell (Reading), Simon Mantell (Reading), Harry Martin (Old Loughtonians), Barry Middleton (East Grinstead), Rob Moore (Surbiton), Mark Pearn (East Grinstead), George Pinner (Beeston), Niall Stott (East Grinstead), James Tindall (Surbiton), Alastair Wilson (Beeston)
