The tickets released are for competitions in both Olympic disciplines, such as jumping, dressage and eventing, and non-Olympic disciplines, such as endurance, with prices starting at €5 (£4/$7) for Para-dressage and €12 (£10/$16) for endurance before going up to €90 (£74/$124) for jumping events.

Ingmar De Vos, the FEI secretary general, urged fans to get hold of tickets while they can as demand has been particularly high for the showpiece competition, which is due to take place from August 23 to September 7.

"No less than 210,000 have already been sold to both French horse enthusiasts and overseas visitors, who have bought more than 50 per cent of the available tickets so far," he added.

"The UK is topping the leaderboard in terms of foreign sales, and is closely followed by the US, Germany, Australia, Belgium and the Netherlands.

"We're confident that the tickets being released today will be snapped up very quickly and are looking forward to sold-out venues in all the disciplines and to an unforgettable atmosphere at the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2014 in Normandy."

Tickets for the individual jumping final - the Final Four with change of horses on the final day of the event - will be put on sale in April, with these being allocated by drawing lots based on online registration.
