Katie TaylorApril 22 - Ireland's international boxing matches against France next month are set to go ahead after it was originally cancelled by organisers following the withdrawal women's Olympic lightweight champion Katie Taylor due to an injury.

The matches, which will see Ireland face France at Rochestown Park Hotel in Cork on May 3 before a second match at Dublin's National Stadium two days later, were originally scrapped when Taylor picked up a hand injury to rule her out of the clashes.

The decision drew huge criticism from Taylor's father and trainer Peter Taylor, who said the decision was hugely disrespectful to the other fighters, including London 2012 Olympic silver medallist John Joe Nevin and bronze medallists Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlan.

Organisers have now backtracked, confirming the event will now go ahead in Cork with the clash in Dublin added as an extra bout.

The series will give Ireland's top fighters a warm-up ahead of the 2013 AIBA European Championships in Minsk in June, while the decision will please Peter Taylor after he slammed the original cancellation.

"Katie is very annoyed by the decision to cancel and so am I," he said when the cancellation was announced.

"We both feel it was disrespectful to the Irish team to cancel the international because of the injury and Katie also feels embarrassed by the decision.

"The international was never intended to be just about Katie Taylor.

"The international was about letting the public see our Olympic team and our elite boxers.

"The squad to meet France included John Joe Nevin, Paddy Barnes and Michael Conlon.

"John, Paddy and Michael have won four Olympic medals between them from the last two Olympics.

"Cancelling the match because of an injury to Katie is disrespectful to some of the best boxers in the world and I'm raging about it."

As well as Nevin, Barnes and Conlan; Darren O'Neill and Adam Nolan - who also competed at the London 2012 Olympics - will be competing for Ireland against France.

Reigning European champion Joe Ward is also set to feature.
