Jerry Colangelo_4_SeptSeptember 4 - Jerry Colangelo plans to remain as chairman of USA Basketball until the next Olympic Games in Rio in 2016.

Colangelo (pictured top) has been with the organsiation since 2005, and since his arrival the men's national team has lost just one game, winning 62, under coach Mike Krzyzewski.

Olympic gold medals at both Beijing in 2008 and London this summer have been picked up in that run, which made up for the disappointment of only winning bronze at Athens in 2004.

The women's team has been equally, if not more, impressive, winning 41 successive games in the Olympics and taking the last five gold medals since Atlanta 1996.

The United States is also defending world titles in the men's Under-17 and Under-18 categories as well as equivalent events in the women's Under-17s and Under-19s.

During his time at the helm, Colangelo – also chairman of the Basketball Hall of Fame – has brought in a selection system which places more emphasis on team chemistry rather than individual reputations.

With Krzyzewski having announced he is leaving his post after six years in charge, Colangelo's future was also in doubt and he had not committed to continuing in his role when questioned during London 2012.

"I've decided I'm going to continue," Colangelo told USA Today.

"I'm committed to our organisation during this transition period.

"What's important is to maintain the credibility and sustainability of USA Basketball.

"I want to make sure the transition is seamless over a period of time.

"If someone is there ready to take over after 2016, that's the right timing.

"I want to make sure, as good as things are, that once the baton is handed over to someone it's in even better shape.

"That's the plan for these next four years."

Colangelo also said he was hopeful that Krzyzewski could yet change his mind about leaving and has left the door open for him.

Although Colangelo has announced that he will stay with USA Basketball, the decision has yet to be officially ratified by the board of directors.
