FIBA and the rest of the basketball world are in the Spanish city as the country gears up for this year's Basketball World Cup, due to tip-off on Sunday (August 31) and runs until September 14.

Today's meeting of the Central Board reflected on the successful implementation of the four key strategic areas which were launched at the 2010 World Congress in Istanbul.

These included the opening of new FIBA headquarters in the Swiss town of Mies last year - known as the House of Basketball - as well as changes to the organisation's governance structure which has seen the setting up of a system of regional offices.

The continued dedication to grow and develop 3x3 basketball, which has been ongoing since the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games through the FIBA 3x3 World Tour and the 3x3 FIBA World Championships, was also discussed, as was the implementation of a new calendar and system of competition which will come into effect in 2017.

During the meeting held at the Hotel Alfonso XIII, the Board also consulted on requests made by National Federations.

These included a review of the basketball rules regarding headgear, which was decided needs further analysis by both FIBA's Technical and Legal Commissions.

Currently, players are banned from wearing headgear for religious reasons, with FIBA claiming the measure is in place for "safety on the basketball court and uniformity of equipment within a team".

A total of 136 National Federations are expected to attend the FIBA World Congress tomorrow and Friday at which a new Central Board will be elected to sit until 2019.

The appointments of Horacio Muratore and Ingo Weiss as FIBA President and Treasurer respectively are also expected to be ratified.

Muratore and Weiss are the only candidates in the running to replace incumbents Yvan Mainini and Manfred Ströher who are both stepping down from the positions.
