September 1 - Great Britain head coach Joe Prunty has named a youthful squad for the European ChampionshipsBritish Basketball has unveiled the 12 players that will take to the courts for the nation at the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) EuroBasket in Slovenia.

The squad for the tournament, which is due to start on Wednesday (September 4) and last until September 22, includes six players who represented Team GB at last summer's Olympic Games in London, where they finished in ninth place overall, while Scots Gareth Murray and Alasdair Fraser will be making their first senior appearances.

Kieron Achara, Eric Boateng, Dan Clark, Andrew Lawrence, Drew Sullivan and Kyle Johnson will be looking to improve on their placing at London 2012 in a British side that will have to do without the services of National Basketball Association (NBA) stars Luol Deng and Joel Freeland, who are out injured.

Young athletes Devon van Oostrum, Myles Hesson, Ogo Adegboye and Justin Robinson complete the line up that will be hoping to secure a first medal for Britain at this level.

The side have warmed up with a number of challenge matches, including an impressive win over Puerto Rico at the Copper Box Arena on the Olympic Park, in which Achara made his 50th appearance for his nation.

"I am very pleased with the final 12 players we have representing Great Britain at EuroBasket 2013," said head coach Joe Prunty, the former assistant manager of NBA franchise the Cleveland Cavaliers, who took over from Chris Finch in June this year.

"Although we have faced some tough games in our preparation, we have played some of the best teams in the world which has tested our players and prepared them well for the challenges ahead in EuroBasket."

The British side begin their campaign on the opening day of the European Championship with a match against Israel, after being drawn in a group that also includes Ukraine, Germany, Belgium and 2011 runners-up France.

Hesson and Fraser play their club basketball in Germany with the Gießen 46ers and the Oettinger Rockets Gotha respectively, and their inside knowledge could prove invaluable against the Germans, in what looks set to be a particularly competitive group.

"We have taken our time to select what we consider to be the best squad which includes a significant number of youthful players with an eye on the future," said British Basketball teams director Warwick Cann.

"Now we look forward to our first game."

In all, 24 teams will do battle in Slovenia, where games will take place across four cities including Ljubljana, Jesenice, Celje and Koper, with the knockout rounds scheduled for the Stožice Arena in the Slovenian capital.

Along with France, Olympic silver medallists Spain will be one of the teams to beat as they look to complete a hat-trick of European Championship wins following their triumphs in Poland in 2009 and Lithuania in 2011.

London 2012 bronze medallists and 2007 European champions Russia, along with 2009 runners-up Serbia are also expected to feature strongly when the medal positions are being decided.
