Chen defeated Malaysian world number one Lee Chong Wei 21-19, 21-19 to claim his first ever world title.

The 69-minute match saw Lee struggling for the most part as Chen put on an impressive display of strategic attacking.

"I have won the Denmark Open in Odense, but this is my first World Championships gold medal and I enjoyed this victory," the new world champion said.

"I'd like to thank the Danish fans."

Home athlete Viktor Axelsen and Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto won the bronze medals.

Meanwhile, Marin delivered one of the biggest shocks of the tournament when she beat Chinese favourite Li Xuerui, the Olympic champion in the discipline, 17-21, 21-17, 21-18.

In doing so, Marin also became the first Spanish world champion in badminton and only the third European world champion since Lene Køppen in 1977 and Camilla Martin in 1999, both of Denmark.

India's PV Sindhu and Minatsu Mitani of Japan took home the bronze medals.

Elsewhere, Ko Sung Hyun and Shin Baek Choel claimed the men's doubles world title in an all-South Korea final.

The pair defeated Lee Yong Dae and Yoo Yeon Seong 22-20, 21-23, 21-18 in 81 minutes.

The women's doubles and mixed doubles finals saw China's Zhao Yunlei becoming the first player for 15 years to take two titles at the same World Championships - the last athlete to do so was South Korea's Kim Dong-moon in 1999.

In the women's doubles - an all-Chinese affair - Yunlei and Tian Qing added the World Championship gold medal to their Olympic title after they beat reigning champions Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli.

"We're very happy to play against Yu Yang and Wang Xiaoli," said Qing.

"We're familiar with each other and happy we could fight each other in the final."

Then in the mixed doubles Yunlei and Zhang Nan overcame their compatriots Xu Chen and Ma Jin 21-12, 21-23, 21-13.
