Nick_Willis_with_arms_in_air_after_Beijing_2008February 23 - New Zealand's Olympic 1500 metres medallist Nick Willis is organsing fundraising track meet in Wellington for the people of Christchurch affected by the earthquake which has so far killed 75 people.


The fundraising event will feature a number of top international athletes and will take place at Newtown Park on this Saturday (February 26).

It will replace the International Athletics Meeting in Christchurch on Saturday has been called off following the earthquake on Monday (February 21).

Nick Willis was scheduled to run at the QEII stadium meeting and be presented with his new Olympic silver medal.

Willis finished third at the 2008 Beijing Games, but was upgraded to second following the disqualification of the gold medallist, Rashid Ramzi of Bahrain.

The new meeting is being organised with the support Athletics New Zealand and the New Zealand Olympic Committee.

Willis will now be presented with his Olympic silver medal at the fundraising meet.

Members of the Wellington public will be encouraged to attend this unique event and make donations to those affected by the earthquake via the Salvation Army's earthquake appeal.

It is expected the medal presentation will take place at approximately 5.00pm followed by the fundraising races.

"What's happened in Christchurch is a tragedy and we even have some members of our family down there unaccounted for at the moment," Willis said.

"Hopefully this meet raises awareness and we can turn it into a charitable situation for the people of Christchurch."

Willis has tacked on "five of six" events to the Wellington interclub programme.

"Most of the 1500m field are guys down here training with me in Lower Hutt," Willis said.

"A few of the Aussies may not worry about coming over now, but we will make the most of what we have got."
