The iconic football stadium, currently being transformed into an athletics venue for this year's Commonwealth Games, will host the world's top athletes on July 11 and 12.

The event will be known as the Sainsbury's Glasgow Grand Prix and will be supported by Sainsbury's, EventScotland and Glasgow City Council.

Glasgow last hosted an international Grand Prix athletics event in 1968.

Last month, the Emirates Arena hosted the Glasgow International Match, which saw athletes from Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the United States, a Commonwealth select team and Scotland taking part in competition.

"As part of our new long-term relationship with British Athletics we're delighted that the 2014 IAAF Diamond League is coming to Glasgow and will be known as the Sainsbury's Glasgow Grand Prix," said head of sponsorship at Sainsbury's, Tara Hewitt.

"Just last month at the Sainsbury's Glasgow International Match we saw the passion and enthusiasm of the Scottish crowd for athletics, and look forward to seeing this again in July and being part of such a momentous summer of athletics in Scotland."

Hampden Park will play host to all athletics events during Glasgow 2014, as well as hosting the Closing Ceremony.

The transformation work will see Hampden's playing surface raised by more than six feet on stilts to accommodate the athletics track and will see the capacity temporarily reduced from 52,000 to 44,000.

The IAAF Diamond League meeting will provide an ideal opportunity to test out the new track and facilities ahead of the Commonwealth Games, which are due to begin on July 23.

The Crystal Palace National Sports Centre had been the long-term home of the London leg of the IAAF Diamond League up until 2013.

Last year, the meeting moved to the Olympic Stadium in Stratford and was incorporated into the one-year anniversary celebrations of London 2012 and was known as the Sainsbury's Anniversary Games.

British Athletics have said that details of ticketing arrangements for the event will be announced within the next two to three weeks.
