October 13 - Dennis Kimetto crosses the line in Chicago setting a new course record in the processDennis Kimetto took 53 seconds off the course record on his way to victory in the Bank of America Chicago Marathon today to lead home a Kenyan top three, while compatriot Rita Jeptoo secured a comfortable win in the women's race to add to her title in Boston earlier this year.

The event in the Windy City took place amid tightened security following the bombings that marred the Boston race in April, in which three people were killed, but it was the action on the roads that thankfully made the headlines this time around.

Just as in Berlin two weeks ago, the men's race was dominated by Kenyans with Kimetto finishing ahead of compatriots Emmanuel Mutai and Sammy Kitwara while Jeptoo and Jemima Sumgong Jelegat completed a Kenyan one-two in the women's event, with Russian Maria Konovalova taking third spot.

Pacemakers Belete Assefa of Ethiopia and Abdellah Falil of Morocco ensured that the first half of the race was not far off world record pace under blue skies in Chicago and as the field slowly began to drop away, Micah Kogo joined Kimetto, Mutai and Kitwara in an all Kenyan leading group at the 35 kilometre mark.

However, Kimetto and Mutai decided the time was right to up the pace and both athletes pulled away in the closing kilometres to set up a straight shoot-out to the line and it was the man who won in Tokyo earlier this year who had the stronger finish as he crossed the line in a time of 2 hours 3min 45sec to shatter the course record of 2:04:38 set last year by Ethiopia's Tsegaye Kebede.

Mutai's time of 2:03:52 saw the 2011 London Marathon winner also break the previous course record in Chicago and register a personal best.

Kimetto was on world record pace in the closing kilometres and look set to seriously threaten the mark of 2:03:23 set by fellow Kenyan Wilson Kipsang in Berlin a fortnight ago, but afterwards Kimetto claimed he was unaware of times and was concentrating on winning the race.

"I didn't pay attention to the clock at all," he said.

"I only paid attention at the end.

"It was only at the finish line that I saw I broke the course record.

"I am happy because I set a course record.

"The conditions were very good."

Jeptoo claimed her second win of the year following on from Boston, with the fastest time of the year as she crossed the line in 2:19:57, 51 seconds clear of Jalagat.

This was in stark contrast to last year, when the 32-year-old lost out to Ethiopa's Atsede Baysa by one second in a thrilling sprint finish.

The defending champion only managed fifth this time round, and could not match the speed and power of her Kenyan rivals in the final third of the race which saw the top two, who are both coached by Claudio Berardelli and are regular training partners, pull away from the rest of the field around the 30km mark.

It was Jeptoo who proved the stronger of the two frontrunners.

"Last year I was not ready to win," said Jeptoo.

"The way my body responded during my training, I was feeling I would maybe run 2:20 or 2:21.

"Today I was strong, I was feeling strong,

"But, I know a race is a race.

"I'm happy today because I ran my best time.

"Last year, I was maybe not ready, maybe 85 [per cent].

"But this year, I was very, very ready."
