South Africa celebrate after their regulation victory over United Arab Emirates ©Getty ImagesSouth Africa dispatched the United Arab Emirates by 146 runs today in Wellington to advance with ease into the quarter-finals of the Cricket World Cup.

The African side, who have never won one day international cricket's showpiece event, scored 341-6 from their allotted 50 overs, with captain and key hitter AB De Villiers leading the way with 99.

Rilee Rossouw and David Miller provided support with respective scores of 43 and 49 before
Farhaan Behardien smashed 64 off 31 balls to rack up a total their opponents never looked capable of reaching.

The UAE have never beaten one of the Test playing nations in a World Cup and their decision to bowl first against one of the strongest batting line-ups in the game always seemed likely to backfire.

Swapnil Patil managed an unbeaten 57 to offer some resistance but they were eventually bowled out for 195 in 47.3 overs.

South Africa are now likely to face Sri Lanka in the first of the quarter-finals in Sydney on Wednesday (March 18).

"It's never just a given you are going to make the quarter-finals of the World Cup, we have a lot of people we are representing back home and we have a great opportunity," said De Villiers.

"They made it difficult so I was very happy with the way we fought, which is what I want to see as a captain."

The UAE have one final match left against the West Indies in Napier on Saturday (March 14), which, although meaningless for them, will be vital for the West Indians if they are to qualify from Pool B.

Tomorrow sees two Pool A clashes as unbeaten co-hosts New Zealand face Bangladesh at Hamilton before Afghanistan come up against England in a dead rubber in Sydney.

Both teams have already been eliminated.
